Curriculum Vitae

Overview:
I'm a visual artist that writes. I develop interactive portraits, publish books, and lecture internationally on this work. I also design digital humans, build virtual worlds, and engineer emotional interfaces. In 2006 I founded HeadCase Humanufacturing, and in 2007 I founded Echo & Shadow - both organizations that build tools that relate to autonomous avatars, non-player characters, and interactive portraits. We call them "Actors".

The work of the last fifteen years has included time as Researcher / Artist-in-Residence at Xerox-PARC, as Creative Director for a venture of Stanford Research Institute. I've spent time as artist/researcher at the Waag Society and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, and have worked as a consultant for dozens of companies, both large and small. I'm the co-inventor of four patents, and the co-founder of three companies. In 1993 I helped design the third commercial website (WELL.com), and in 1996 I helped design the first open-protocol multi-user 3D environment (using VRML). Though I'm able to leap small buildings with a single bound, I avoid catching bullets with my teeth whenever possible.

My work lives at the intersection of culture and technology, at the point where literature, interactivity, and visual art overlap. My 3D animation and interactive design has been flown by a list of companies that include Lucasfilm, Sony Pictures, and Microsoft. Since 1987 I've been selling my artwork in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe and in that time I've received highest honors and awards from Ars Electronica (The Golden Nica), the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the National Information Infrastructure (NII), among others.

I have published two books, the first titled, "Pause & Effect; The Art of Interactive Narrative", the second is "I, Avatar; The Culture and Consequences of Having a Second Life."

I spend my days recovering from jetlag, cleaning paintbrushes, repairing my boat, and learning accordian.

Education:
I completed my bachelor's degree in math, philosophy, and literature from St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Prior to that I managed to avoid completing degrees at The San Francisco Art Institute (painting and photography), University of Colorado (philosophy), Harvard University (biology), and Bemis Art School (painting).

Personal Information:
Since I was born on the bayou in Biloxi, Mississippi, during September of 1968, insurance statistics predict I will probably die sometime around October of 2053, also in Biloxi, Mississippi. These days, however, I am happily alive and speaking. I'm fluent in French and English and can quickly confuse most Spanish-speakers. I'm able to de-code attic and Homeric Greek, as well as Latin, Java, C++, and cocktail conversation. I've also fought forest fires (Pike and Sierra Inter-regional HotShot Crews), raced bicycles (US National Track Cycling Team/USOTC) and carry my US Coast Guard certified 100-Ton Captain's license. I know how to start a fire, spit over seven meters, and, if properly inspired, will dance until dawn.

Personal websites are "The BOAR.DOM," - bore.com, boar.com, and boor.com.
